Animas Gorge

The gorge is one of the last refuges for Grizzly Bears, and one of the last grizzly bears was killed in the area.
Animas National Forest

Animas National Park

It is still the only means of transportation to and through the valley. The train has a picturesque atmosphere and stops at many historic sites along the way. Once you reach the park, you’ll see why it’s known as one of Colorado’s most scenic destinations.
After the railway’s completion, the Animas Canyon Toll Road was largely destroyed. This roadbed was claimed by the D&RG when construction began in 1882. In addition, residential development near Rockwood destroyed the southernmost portions of the toll road. Today, this toll road is only visible in a few sections. However, you can still explore the canyon on foot or with a horse.
