Animas National Park
If you’ve never visited Animas National Park, this is the perfect way to see the park! The railroad started operating in 1874 and initially served as a way to transport gold and ore. It is still the only means of transportation to and through the valley. The train has a picturesque atmosphere and stops at many historic sites along the way. Once you reach the park, you’ll see why it’s known as one of Colorado’s most scenic destinations.
After the railway’s completion, the Animas Canyon Toll Road was largely destroyed. This roadbed was claimed by the D&RG when construction began in 1882. In addition, residential development near Rockwood destroyed the southernmost portions of the toll road. Today, this toll road is only visible in a few sections. However, you can still explore the canyon on foot or with a horse.
